Handmade Afghan War Rugs
Afghan War Rugs are unqiue. Each are created using natural materials and centuries-old techniques, with designs that depict images which embody the perspective of the masterweaver who created it during a time of extreme political strife.
This category of fine quality Rugs first appeared back in the late 1970s, with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. While the majority of Afghan War Rugs relate to this war, the category has grown to include any rug that features images of war and military combat in contemporary society. All are handmade following techniques particular to the weaver and the region from which s/he hails. Generally, the majority of War Rugs are created in Afghanistan, a country that has endured the trauma of countless wars. Common themes are modern-day weaponry, maps of affected areas and key events.
Afghan War Rugs appeal to a niche market of individuals who are interested in aesthetically pleasing and functional art that reflects turbulent times.
Please note that these rugs are not intended to promote war or a side. Rather, they are accounts of the weavers who have lived through war and who wish to express their experiences through the medium of rug weaving.
