So, you’ve decided that a particular Persian Rug Store meets the qualifications you’ve set. The salespeople are trustworthy, knowledgeable and forthcoming. The reputation of the store is excellent or close to it, with many satisfied customers. The selection at the store meets your expectations. You’ve found the perfect rug. At first glance, you like its design, size, shape and style. Now you’re ready to move on to the next stage: inspection.
Inspecting the Persian Rug you’re interested in purchasing is obviously an important step to take. Its quality is vouched for by the sales staff, but further inspection conducted by yourself is imperative. You must give it the once over prior to purchasing to ensure you’re making the right decision. Although manufacturers strive for perfection, the final product may have flaws that you’d be unhappy with.
Here are some tips to remember when inspecting a Persian Rug.
1. Instead of inspecting it hung up or on a pile of other rugs, ask the salesperson who’s helping you to lay the rug flat on the floor, since it’ll be on the floor in your home. From this angle, the qualities of the rug may change. Perhaps the colours won’t be as vibrant, or some details won’t be as visible. Seeing it from a bird’s eye view will also help you determine symmetry and if design elements, such as a central medallion, are centered/in the correct position. Such traits can make or break a deal.
2. While looking at it from above, inspect the overall shape of the Persian Rug. Make sure it’s rectangular, square, or the shape it is stated to be. While it may not be perfect, irregularities such as narrower middles and sloped or crooked sides can be obvious and detract from its beauty.
3. Look at the rug under a different light, something that would preferably match the lighting of your home. Rug dyes, particularly naturally sourced ones, can change dramatically under different types of lighting. This is one of the qualities that make these rugs so precious. And remember to look at the rug from both ends, in the direction of and against the pile. Therefore you may like the colours of a rug in the shop, but when you take it home, you may be (un)pleasantly surprised.
4. Flip the rug over to see the underside. This is important if you’d like to verify its knot count or the type of knot, since it’s easier to determine on this side. The design should be incredibly similar to the top of the rug, indicating that it is of higher quality.
5. Examine the edges of the rug closely. Stitching along the edges should not be damaged, since shoddy workmanship here can lead to costly repairs in the near future. It should be tight and wound evenly so that fraying or unraveling is adequately prevented.
